چکیده

Portlets-based software development is gaining recognition as a key technology for the construction of robust and evolvable Web applications. Emerging portlet standards like JSR-168 or WSRP—along with commercial development tools and portal servers—enable designers to quickly develop, integrate and run “composite” Web portals, which integrate specific platforms and partners. Despite this significant progress, there is a lack of guidelines and models for addressing the development of portlet-based Web applications from a technology-independent viewpoint. This work tries to identify the main concerns involved in modeling portlets, determine the major models required to capture these concerns, and propose a way to address their integration into Web applications, from a platformindependent point of view. In so doing, we also introduce mechanisms for modeling inter-portlet communication and cooperation capabilities independently of the target portal server product.

HPC Portal: a Repository of Portal Resources

As computational science is developing, multiple Grid resources are being used widely by scientists and engineers in their work. A Grid portal is an environment and a Web-based application which should be familiar to anyone who has used a Web browser. The growth of Grid applications brings a challenge of how to develop a successful Grid portal. HPC Portal is a generic Grid portal development pr...

WSRP, SOA and UDDI

Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) provide solutions for implementation of lightweight Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). UDDI extension for WSRP enables the discovery and access to user facing web services provided by business partners while eliminating the need to design local user facing portlets. Most importantly, the remote portlets can be updated by web service providers from their...

Portlets as Web Components: an Introduction

Today’s organisations are increasingly relying on the web to support their operations and the integration of their processes with their partners’. Portlets, which are distributed web components that encapsulate web applications, are considered a promising breakthrough towards this aim. The goal is to define a component model to enable portlets to be easily plugged into web portals. This article...

The accessibility of web applications: the case of portals and portlets

This paper discusses the abstraction and extension of portal systems and definitions of portlets in order for them to become more accessible. A whole/parts perspective is adopted that considers portal systems as a whole and the portlets as parts that need to have some attributes, behaviours and organisation for accomplishing their purpose. A comparison between a portal system and a web site in ...

Java Portals and Java Portlet Specification and API

Introduction Second generation Web portals distinguish themselves from first generation ones for their architecture, which is component-oriented. In particular, the basic component constituting them, is often referred to as portlet. The portal is responsible for aggregating information coming from different sources, local or remote, available in the form of mark-up fragments. Each of those frag...
